Dining Room Revamp.....
25 years ago my clients renovated this dilapitated 19th Century cottage. After extensive building works and restoration processes they had run out of steam! The walls of this odd shaped dining room were left white, the doors, of which there are six, were stained in antique pine, along with the skirting boards and architraves. I was asked to breath new life into the space.
The walls, skirtings and ceilings were all painted in @benjaminmoore paint 'Celery White' creating a lovely bright airy feel. The doors and architraves finished in a contrast Sage Green, to bring a flash of colour and a nod to nature through the windows.
The 3 windows, all of which were different heights and interrupted by beams were cleverly uniformed by taking all the roman blinds to the ceiling and in one case making a false header to the blind which was shaped around the beam. All finished beautifully with @jamesharefabric 'Mikado' in natural.
A truly refreshing transformation!

Pretty Garden Room...
Whilst it's always lovely to sit in the sunshine, these south facing windows were playing havoc with all the beautiful furniture. My brief was to replicate the style of curtains and poles in the drawing room.
I was given one remaining strip of fabric and so began my colour matching search. This lovely woven fabric, Tabby Weave from @titleyandmarr was a really good contrast to the strip of remaining border fabric and a dream to work with according to my curtain maker!

Having Trouble imagining???
This was a recent commission for a client. They wanted some bespoke tiles designed but couldn't imagine how the design would look. The pattern was inspired from a local village church and the finished image worked using several techniques including sponging, gouache paints and gilding.

Bespoke Ottoman
I've really enjoyed my latest project creating this ottoman for my client. Very simple brief....copy that picture!
The Lost & Found fabric by @christopherfarrcloth it is so adaptable and this particular colour, so pretty. Perfect choice.
The top to the ottoman is sturdy, soft enough to cushion as a seat but could also be used as a table. The finishing touches were with some bobbin legs from @davedalbywoodturning which we stained to suit our workshop.

This lovely serpentine ornate console table had a very ugly crack running down its centre. I was asked if I could stabilise the table, fill and colour match to existing.
After dabbling with fillers, gilding waxes, paints and various antiquing waxes, I think it went really well!!

Textile Reproduction! Whilst it is always a prefer

Textile Reproduction!
Whilst it is always a preference to restore items for clients this embroidered textile cushion was beyond the pale. It had already been restored once but the backing cloth was just disintegrating so we made the decision to reproduce this lovely piece.
Once again I used my unusual technique of making my own backing cloth from felted crochet, chunky wool courtesy of World of Wool
The pattern was then recreated and transcribed using various techniques. With the final layer embroidered using the very colourful palette from @appletons_wool
I hope you all enjoy the process as mush as I did!

Who remembers the sample boards from a few months back!?
Well, here are the chosen fabrics in their finished state, the very pretty Hester from @linwood_fabric and Vienne Silk and fringe from @jamesharefabric
The brief was to make curtains that didn't overwhelm the room but allowed all the elements to be more cohesive on these very large windows which spanned each side of the room.
The result was a cosy feel, tying together with an eclectic mix the modern lines of the contemporary build with the antique gilt paintings and damask fabrics. Finishing off splendidly with the gilt poles and rings courtesy of @byronandbyronltd

Tristan's Birthday! Another enjoyable week honing

Tristan's Birthday!
Another enjoyable week honing my gilding skills, this time it was a gift for my son Tristan.
Having found the perfect sized frame in a junk shop, I then set about transforming it. The chosen painting was quite dark in nature, hence deciding to gild the frame in order to bring out the subtle colours of the oil painting.
After a bit of filling, sanding, red bole undercoat, it was time to use the imitation gold leaf. Finally, there was an antiquing glaze to tone down the bright gold. I thought it worked well.

Continuing from my last reel of the restored eagle

Continuing from my last reel of the restored eagle (see Insta if you missed it!), following are a few snapshots of the final process.

Having remodelled the new wing in polymer clay, I then layer painted it with red and then yellow Gouache.

Having mixed together a solution of shell gold; crumbled gold leaf and Gum Arabic it was then applied to the painted surface creating a lovely deep mellow hue, which was finally antiqued using a glaze and rottenstone in order to colour match the existing.

This has been a really enjoyable restoration proje

This has been a really enjoyable restoration project. The eagle was missing a wing and was also broken on the corner.
A wooden armature was fixed in place for the new wing and then the remodelling began! As this piece is originally made from resin I decided to use polymer clay as there is minimal shrinkage once baked.
My lovely client was very pleased with the outcome and the eagle can now sit proudly back on his antique barometer!

This was the 2nd design for the Moroccan fountainhead project.

Just like before, once the designs had been finalised, the fountains were cast in plaster to ensure that they could be transported safely to Morocco, where the final step was to have them cast in bronze.

It’s unfortunate that I haven't been able to see the finished water fountains in all their glory but nonetheless, this was such a memorable project to work on and it was so wonderful having the chance to unleash my creativity on such a large scale.

Yet another project I worked on whilst out in Aust

Yet another project I worked on whilst out in Australia...

I was fortunate enough to work alongside the very talented artist Anne Middleton, who had wanted an art nouveau frieze to line the walls of her artist studio. She asked me to model a panel from a black and white image that she had always wanted to use and so I spent three pleasant months modelling this up into clay, making it into a mould and then casting the first piece.

It was a pleasure to have worked on this project and it’s such a great memory to look back on!

A true transformation! This sweet little chair w

A true transformation!

This sweet little chair was a junk shop find that was sourced for a child's room. As the chair was covered with some very antiquated fabric, I decided to remove it & strip the wood back to its original oak colour.

I love the way that the stain has ingrained itself into the oak and ultimately, I think this really lifts the grain work. This chair was then recovered in a teal coloured velvet alongside a pretty contrasting back.

It’s safe to say that its youthful recipient was very happy!

Looking back once again at my old portfolio work,

Looking back once again at my old portfolio work, this project was inspired by my time travelling in Australia.

All of these pieces involved several different techniques including pointillism which reminds me now of the very popular mandela art dotting process. These pictures required a lot of attention to detail and patience, something which I always involve in my work even now.

A textile restoration project

Referring back to an older post, this flag restoration project involved turning a folded textile piece that was hidden away in a drawer into useful floor cushions with felted crochet backs. For me, this was a very satisfying project as I love repurposing items that would otherwise be neglected.

Using fabric paints, I started this project by recolouring the textiles and the backing fabric. This helped to hide any holes in the piece which I then painted over again to ensure they were fully covered.

Mood boards for bespoke bedroom curtains

The brief from the client was for these curtains to finish above floor level due to several pieces of furniture being around the room. It was more practical for the curtains to finish at this height and so despite this being a challenge, it was crucial to find a way to finish the curtains so that they complimented the rest of the room in a style that felt natural.

All of these options involved an interesting finish to run along the bottom edge of each curtain. This would ensure that the eye would follow the design and travel around the room as opposed to stopping half way down the wall.

A comfortable addition to a lovely modern bathroom…

My client wanted somewhere for her guests to sit comfortably after a long soak in the bath and so this sweet little seat squab was made from mould resistant exterior waterproof fabric to make it fully functional. We then added some colourful pom poms as detailing for a pop of colour and to also add a smile to your face!

Progress in the studio

A lot has been happening since the last update on the studio which was now over a year ago! The flooring has been laid, lighting has been installed as well as a little log burner with some gorgeous mural tiling behind it and a little kitchenette for all those essential cups of coffee.

Although the studio is not quite finished yet, I'm really pleased with the way that it's looking. It’s been such a great space to work in, the natural lighting inside is superb and it’s spacious enough that I can even stylise a whole room around my ideas. The headboard post from a few weeks ago is a great example of this… it wasn't actually in someone's bedroom but a home staging instead!

Modelling Water Fountains

Recently I have been catching up with my portfolio and looking back at one of my favourite projects from the past, the creation of 2 fountain heads for a project in Morocco.

Before the modelling process could begin, I started off this project with some research work and several proposal sketches for the client.

Once their designs had been finalised, the heads of the fountains were initially modelled up in polystyrene before being shaped and cut to their approximate sizes. The clay was then overlaid and the detail modelled. As the fountains had to be transported to Morocco, it was essential to make a mould and have it cast in plaster so that the designs could arrive safely in Africa.

Once the models had arrived, the final step was to have them cast in bronze. Unfortunately, I have not been able to see the finished water fountains so if anyone has ever seen these, please let me know!

Quick kitchen tweaks…

Just a few simple tweaks in a room can transform how you feel about a space and it doesn't always mean having to spend a lot of money.

In this particular job, my client was tired of looking at her back kitchen and so we designed a curtain to help disguise certain elements of this space. This woven fabric from Christopher Farr was a great choice as it’s double sided which meant the pattern could be viewed from both sides, simple yet striking but also practical as it meant that the curtain did not have to be lined creating excess bulk, the practicalities continued with finishing the curtain above floor level.

Seat covers were made for the little wooden side chairs with left over pieces fabric and the dining chairs were recovered with bespoke machine washable linen covers.

Despite being a few small tweaks, they provide an effortless and lighter feel to the kitchen, as well as proving that a little goes a long way!

Sometimes my work takes a completely different tack and on this occasion I was prop designing and making.

I handmade this rickshaw carriage out of bits & bobs I managed to find from the studio - I even made sure that the wheels could spin around! This project was so fun, I really enjoyed the creative process and experimenting with different types of work…

Adding a splash of colour to a bathroom…

Today’s post is just a bit of playful fun in this children's bathroom. The space had been kept very minimalistic with white tiles and a black painted cork floor.

To bring a pop of colour to the room, this lovely waterfall roman blind was made using ‘Vertical in Orange’ fabric from Christopher Farr. A little privacy cafe curtain was then added to the bottom half of the window, with ‘Ladder Stitch’ fabric sourced from Pierre Frey.

Just a few simple tweaks was all it took to add a splash of colour to this sweet little bathroom!

Dressing a small bedroom… This space was archit

Dressing a small bedroom…

This space was architecturally interesting but very small, dominated by a beautiful antique 4-poster bed. I wanted to soften the room with some fabric, so we decided on a discrete bed dressing made from a green voile fabric, sourced from Fermoie.

Dressing the window proved to be a little more tricky as this room was part of a converted barn with wonky walls and ceilings. A key aspect of this design was disguising the wall which stepped out due to the old wooden beams. In order to overcome this quirk I had the curtains cut and shaped as they returned into the wall. A shaped pelmet was then designed to cover the top of the window and the side returns, in order to disguise any discrepancies in levels.

‘The Tree Of Life’ fabric from Claremont, was a great choice for this room and the 'Honey Pot Fringe’ from Osbourne and Little was used to finish the edge of the pelmet.

Then the final touch was to accentuate the cosy feel, and so, the walls were painted in ‘Vegetal Lichen Brun’ - a gorgeous shade from Argile Paints.

Here is the headboard in its new home…

This setup was extra satisfying as all of the furniture has been sourced from antique fairs and shops.

The lamp was originally a Clossonie vase which, after being transformed into a lamp, had the addition of a spray painted lampshade for some extra colour. The middle cushion is one of my favourite completed bespoke pieces and, as it looks remarkably good against the headboard, it has found a new home!

All of the paintings were also sourced from a local auction house and the bunting was handmade from scraps of old fabric.

If you are in need of a personalised and bespoke room, remember that these special pieces don’t have to come at too high a price. It’s always been so important to me to reuse things when I can, instead of constantly buying new pieces. With all of my designs, I love to be really inventive as it helps in creating a look that hasn’t been seen before. This room is filled with personal, one off pieces which I think plays a part in making it such a special space.

Who guessed correctly?

Here is the finished headboard in all its colourful glory! The client instantly went for option one, which I think has worked out really well.

As mentioned before, it was originally an antique Romanian textile that I had previously sourced and I paired this with a beautiful border fabric from @schumacher_uk . To tie it all together, I chose a black and white faux leather piping from @houles_official , to run along the edge and to contrast the colours of the headboard.

I couldn't be more pleased with the results, and it’s always so satisfying having completed a project and watching my ideas come to life.

A reminder that bookcases don’t just have to be

A reminder that bookcases don’t just have to be used for books!

This infamous piece of furniture is, of course, known for storing books but that’s not all that a bookcase has to offer…

As shown in the first picture, this particular bookcase was made for TV storage. Its purpose built design, alongside a clever choice of paint colour, allows the TV to be hidden rather well.

The second picture shows a work in progress bookcase which illustrates an example of space saving techniques, achieved by cases being built up and over the door. This build was also useful because it hid a reinforced steel joist, which is now a handy CD storage.

The final photo captures the finished bookcase, fully painted with all its storage compartments coming in very useful!

Whilst bookcases definitely have their many uses, my favourite thing about them is the way they introduce a mixture of elevation into a room. Aside from their practicality, a bookcase helps to add depth into any space so that it doesn’t feel too small.

A frame restoration project

This particular frame was quite damaged, warped and had lost a lot of its decorative detail. Firstly I needed to take relief impressions of some of the remaining sections in Alginate Moulding Compound after which a plaster replica was then cast. Next, a silicone mould was made which is more a stable mould, allowing me to cast several new sections for the frame where all the details were missing.

There was also a lot of woodwork repair to be done before the restoration works were complete, but now this lovely frame is waiting for its final coat of gilt, the colour of which my client is still deciding on….

Feria 🥳 We’ve spent the last 4 days experien

Feria 🥳

We’ve spent the last 4 days experiencing our first Feria - a celebration of the local patron saint of Gaucin called St Nieves.

There was lots of music, dancing, sherry tasting, horse parades, paella for all the village and visitors and even the crowning of the new Feria Queen! It's been fun, and the bright colours of the crochet decorations have given me lots of inspiration.

I love the big circles as they create gorgeous dappled shade in the sun that’s really effective. I think they could make a great alternative to sun shades… a new project for me maybe?

I’m excited to see the finished piece!

This is the beginnings of a replica copy of a cushion cover that I had restored once before, however over its years of use, the backing cloth has really deteriorated beyond repair. For this reason, it was decided that I should copy and replace it, to bring it back to life.

This time I used a felted crochet canvas as it’s renowned for having strong longevity. I then began using a variety of techniques to copy and paste the image onto this new canvas, including some quilting techniques, such as tracing and pouncing, in order to transfer the design.

After this, the next step was to build the outline of the design with the first stitches…

I’m really excited to be able to finish this project, as the next stage is to colour in the design - my favourite part!

Today’s post is dedicated to the memory of my wonderful father who was taken from us too suddenly on 30th June 2023, aged 80.

My family and I have received so many touching messages all of which have a common thread, his great qualities: fun, kind, loving, generous in spirit, a true gentleman.

This is a proposal of designs for a headboard.

I was inspired by a beautiful antique Romanian textile that I had sourced, the colours and textures were perfect for a headboard. The only problem was; it wouldn't fit my client's king size bed…

In order to combat this, I decided to create borders around the top and outside edges to fulfil the textile to the correct width.

I designed two options, they are two quite different looks! Once the designs were finalised, I hand sketched and painted them in order to bring my visions to life. These were then shared with my clients, which I find helps them to grasp the context of my designs.

I'm now set to start manufacturing, so which option do you think my client has chosen?

Meet the so-called ‘unsalvageable’ sofa…

This poor old sofa had been rejected to the garage, it needed a significant amount of repair work as the bottom was falling out. Initially, my client was very upset as a lot of other upholsterers had refused to deal with the sofa unless they could have completely reupholster it, which would include replacing the top fabric. This was far from ideal, and a very costly job.

So after speaking very gently to my upholsterer, we decided that we could repair the sofa without compromising the fabric itself.

And here’s the finished piece!

As always with restoration projects, it’s a joy to breathe new life into overlooked pieces and it was so lovely getting to see this sofa finally sitting proud in my clients sitting room.

Rescuing Beethoven

Revisiting an earlier post, Beethoven was rescued from a country house where he was no longer wanted by the new owners. He was thrown in a skip, but fortunately rescued making his next journey to a local antiques fair, where I picked him up ready to give him a makeover…

To start, I removed any chipped paint and filled in sections of his hair that were missing. Any dents to his facial features were all repaired and remodelled too.

After that it was time for the final touch! A patination coat was added to give the illusion of age, making any newly restored sections appear the same age as the rest of Beethoven.
